10 USU journalists receive Mark of Excellence awards from Society of Professional Journalists

Ten Utah State University students, including four from The Utah Statesman, received 2017 Mark of Excellence awards at the Society of Professional Journalists conference April 21 in Denver.

Student entries competing in Region 9 from Utah, Colorado, New Mexico and Wyoming colleges were judged by professional journalists. The Aggies combined for 13 total awards — six winners and seven finalists. The winners’ work will be judged at a national competition against students from 12 total regions.

The Utah Statesman’s opinion manager Logan Jones won first place in the Sports Column Writing category for “A personal thank you to the man in the odd cap,” “Rayshad Lewis owes you nothing” and “Nothing but respect for those who kneel.”

Statesman sports senior writer Daniel Hansen was the runner up in sports columns with “On the flipside of a storybook ending,” “End of the Jalen Moore era” and “Crossroads of Utah State football.”

Alison Berg and Carter Moore won first place for In-Depth Reporting for their investigative story “$8 million of Huntsman school differential tuition being spent without input from students who pay it.”
