100 years of Aggie Ice Cream memories

The Aggie Creamery celebrated 100 years of Aggie Ice Cream on Friday, Jan. 21 by selling scoops of ice cream for a dollar. Students like junior Isacc Holcomb were ecstatic at the deal.

If the creamery normally sold ice cream for a dollar, Holcomb said he would camp out all night for it.

The memories at the Aggie Creamery are hard to beat. For sophomore Alyssa Mildnhall, Aggie Ice Cream holds memories from before she became an Aggie.

“I remember before I even came to school here, I went up here with my family and my cousins,” Mildnhall recalls. “We all sat in that corner over there and ate ice cream.”

When John Ruff was trying to decide on a university to attend, the Aggie Creamery turned out to be a deciding factor. According to Ruff, who is now in his sophomore year at Utah State University, he was trying to decide between USU, BYU and the University of Utah. To get a feel for the college life at Utah State, he stayed with some friends in Logan and visited the creamery.

“I will always remember that I got Aggie Blue Mint. We walked back outside and right at that moment, the entire football team came by. And one of them looked at me and he was like, ‘You’re coming to Utah State, right?’ And I was like, ‘Yeah, I’m coming to Utah State,’” Ruff recalled. “It was the first moment where I decided I was gonna come up here.”

The creamery is a place for memories of all kinds — formative and funny alike.

“Once I had a friend that bought an ice cream cone and the second they walked out the door it spilled everywhere,” Holcomb said. “That’s a pretty classic story, but definitely a memorable one.”

Ruff described the Aggie Creamery as a “spiritual awakening” and had strong recommendations for Aggie Ice Cream flavors.

“At the end of the day, I always come back to the blue mint,” Ruff said. “I’d spend the rest of my life waiting for Aggie Ice Cream.”

Meanwhile, junior Kelson Lee recommends the bull tracks.

“I generally frequent this establishment a little more, typically once a month, twice a month,” Lee said. “I’m a sucker for ice cream.”

Specifically, Aggie Ice Cream. But, the Aggie Creamery isn’t the only notable ice cream stop in Utah.

The Aggie Creamery is rivaled by the BYU Creamery in Provo, which has been selling ice cream since 1949 — 27 years after Aggie Ice Cream started at USU. So to some Aggies, there’s no competition.

“I’ve been to the BYU creamery a lot but I feel like they have better flavor options here,” Mildnhall said. “I guess I like the vibe in here more. I like the seating and the cute ice cream on the wall. I feel like the decorations look better here, too.”

Freshman Malia Taufui attended Utah State Football games with her family, stopping at the Aggie Creamery for scoops of ice cream after the game. Sophomore Melody Loutzenhiser enjoys free Aggie Ice Cream at school events. And today, Aggies and Cache County residents enjoyed a scoop of their favorite Aggie Ice Cream for a dollar.

It’s a cheap price for memories that last a lifetime.
