2007: A year in review
Though the men’s and women’s cross country teams were the lone members of the USU athletic department to claim a WAC title, a common thread through the 2006-07 school year was the meeting and exceeding of expectations.
The men’s basketball team, prospected to finish fourth in a talented WAC, plowed its way two times through a talent-loaded Nevada Wolf Pack team, who was, at the time, ranked in the top 10. The second triumph over the Wolf Pack propelled USU into the WAC title game against the New Mexico State Aggies, who held the home court advantage to defeat USU.
The women’s basketball squad won 11 games, topping last season’s win-total of three. And the Aggies nearly topped it off by capturing their first-ever win in the post-season tournament.
The women’s soccer team placed second in the WAC in the regular season, after picked to finish fifth.
Aggie softball has already racked up 15 victories, more than double their mark of eight in ’06.
Gymnastics Head Coach Ray Corn led his team to the Regional tournament for the 26th time in his 30 years at USU.
As for football, there was that amazing homecoming-game pass from Riley Nelson to Kevin Robinson, which had to be done twice, to push the Aggies to a win over Fresno State and into the win column.
All things considered, things could have been a lot worse for fans of Aggie athletics.
