LETTER: There’s a point to Gen Ed

To the editor:

I was sorry to read Monday’s letter about Gen Ed courses being a waste of students’ time. It seems by “waste of time” the writer means “anything that doesn’t help me be an engineer.” The weird thing is that a university education is something different from a vocational program. We all like to pretend we are turning out educated human beings — who, incidentally, have a specific expertise in engineering, or business, or whatever. But if he’s been through the Gen Ed program, and he doesn’t see this, then I guess that in the end he is right after all: the Gen Ed program hasn’t done much for him. USU has failed him, and we should do better.
