ASUSU VIEW: It’s time to make your mark at USU

Lisa Watkins

What mark will you leave on USU?

As a student, you are a member of the Associated Students of USU. Since 1969, this body has been the student’s liaison to the administration and state government. Unlike other universities around the nation, USU is unique in that council members each sit on at least two (if not more) university-wide committees. The members work closely with faculty and administration to address student concerns and issues.

Why does this matter? It’s time again for ASUSU elections.

I’m sure you have probably thought of something you would like to change about your college experience. Whether it is academic advising, a new tradition, student fees or a fun activity you would like to see, you have the opportunity to make a difference.

It is time for those who want to lead to stand up. It’s time to announce your candidacy for any of the nine offices available to you. It doesn’t matter if you are interested in athletics, activities, service or legislating; there is something you can do.

Last year 40 students ran for office in ASUSU elections. That’s down from 65 the previous year. I understand there are students who feel student government is just a popularity contest, but I feel this is a view simply carried over from dealing with high school elections. I think anyone who takes the time to really learn about ASUSU will change his or her mind. I would invite anyone that is at all interested to visit the third floor of the TSC and meet with the hardworking individuals that are serving the students this year. They can tell you all about what they’ve done so far and what you can do to help.

It’s easy for anyone to sit back and criticize, but it takes a true leader to stand up and make changes. We aren’t looking for people who look at something and ask “Why?” We’re looking for people who have a vision and ask “Why not?”

Is the system perfect? Probably not. But we are constantly working to improve it, and that’s where we need your help. What will your contribution to the USU be? If you haven’t thought about it, maybe you should. We would love to discuss it with you.

See you on the third floor.
