LETTER: A general waste of our time

To the editor:

The general education requirements for graduation are a joke. In fact, the idea that any student nationwide escapes college with a “well-rounded” education is laughable. Will someone please explain to me how courses such as: Masterpieces of Music, History of Interior Furnishings I & II, Family Finance, or Natural Disasters are preparing me for a career in engineering? I’m sure the first question out of my potential employer’s mouth will be, “Can you tell me a little something about that chair you’re sitting on?” or “What is the basis of the fujita scale?”

As a senior I’ve taken 18 total credits of “general education,” which amounts to $1,974.63 in tuition, $265.00 in student fees, $200.00 in books, and $1,200 for an apartment which results in a grand total of $3,639.63. I’m glad that for $3,639.63 I now know hurricanes are bad, Beethoven made music, chairs come in a variety of shapes, and I finally know how to add and subtract to balance a checkbook. I want 4 months of my life back.
