LETTER: God is in Constitution
Editor,
The bogus interpretation of separation of church and state put forth in The Far Left Bank, (April 11) is a mockery of the Constitution – not a triumph. The “establishment” clause was written to prevent establishment of a state religion like the Church of England. Nowadays, due to lack of education about the Constitution, the leftist view that this clause was written to prevent any form of anything religious from being associated with the government in any way, is prevalent. The left, in order for this viewpoint to fly, count on the fact that the majority of Americans are completely ignorant when it comes to the Constitution. Unfortunately, they are correct in this assumption.
The writer also trusts that we are so ignorant of the Constitution and other central founding documents that we will believe his phony claim that “the word God is not written into the U.S. Constitution.” He is right that the word God is not in the Constitution, but maybe he should read the “Declaration of Independence.” Therein he’ll find the words “endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights,” “Laws of Nature and Nature’s God” and “the Supreme Judge of the world.”
The Founders’ view is that rights come from God, the Creator, not the government. This means that the government’s responsibility is protecting God-given rights. The government’s power should be limited to this responsibility. Those who wish to exert greater control over our lives aren’t happy with this. For them to gain greater control, they must suppress the idea of God-given rights, and take God out of the founding of our great country.
The attack on Christian values, of which the “church and state” debate is representative, is another way for the left to advance their agenda. They want our primary allegiance to be to government, not God or religion. In order for them to advance, say, homosexual marriage for example, there must be an attack on teachings against homosexual marriage – an attack on church and family values.
How much of an attack on America are we going to take before we do something?
