Lady Ags swept by Univ. of Utah in Salt Lake
The Utah State women’s tennis team was beat 7-0 Saturday against the No. 66-ranked University of Utah.
The match featured a reuniting of three current Aggies with former teammates, Erin Monson and Dee-Dee Nelson, who are now competing for the Utes. The two former Aggies, who transferred to the University of Utah before the start of the 2007-08 school year, came back to haunt their former teammates.
Monson logged one of two sweep victories of the match over former teammate and current Aggie Bridgette Strickland in No. 3 singles, 6-0, 6-0.
The Utes’ other sweep in singles play came in the No. 2 pairing, where Utah’s Emily Kwok defeated Utah State’s Hailey Swenson, 6-0, 6-0.
Utah State’s Brianna Harris fell in No. 1 singles to the Utah’s Evgenia Kryuchkova 6-2, 6-2, in what ended up being the closest singles pairing of the day.
In No. 6 singles, Nelson beat USU freshman Jennifer Johnson in straight sets 6-1, 6-2.
Utah State’s struggles continued in doubles play dropping all three pairings. Utah State has now been swept in doubles play in each of their seven losses this season. Utah State’s No. 1 doubles team of Harris and Strickland fell to Utah’s No. 41-ranked duo of Elizabeth Ferris and Kwok, 8-1.
Utah’s No. 2 doubles team of Leigh Walsh and Kryuchkova survived a late rally by USU’s Britney Watts and Swenson for an 8-5 win.
Monson also posted a win against her old team in No. 3 doubles, teaming up with Andrea Maughan for an 8-2 victory over USU’s Taylor Perry and Jennifer Johnson.
The loss pushes Utah State’s current streak to six losses and drops their record to 2-7 on the season. The Aggies return to action Saturday at home against Nevada.
