Discrimination in Elections
Unfortunately, some students of Utah State have once again shown their perverse and disgusting homophobic attitudes by trying to influence the recent ASUSU election.
On the final day of the election I received an ignorant email regarding the Diversity and Organizations VP candidates. The email was sent out to many clubs and described one of the candidates as unfit, not due to his possible lack of experience or ideas for the office, he was considered unfit because of his sexual preference. He was condemed as “immoral” and was said to “not share the basic beliefs of the studentbody”. The email went on to quote Gordon B. Hinkley, and describe the candidate as nice, but weak and perverted.
Now, I realize that the majority of the students at this University are members of the same church, however it seems as though many of you refuse to read your own history. Let us not forget that many Americans once despised those of the Mormon faith. In fact, Mormons were viewed as perverse, immoral, and evil. In a famous speech given by Abraham Lincoln he said that we must ” rid the world of the twin relics of barbarism, slavery and polygamy.” These innocent men and women were chased out of their own country after the founder of their church was murdered for his religious and moral beliefs.
Over 150 years have past, but many of you have yet to learn the lesson of that time. It is not only hard to be different (in this case it is not a decision), but it can be deadly, due to people’s ignorance and bigotry.
It is ridiculous for anyone to attempt to railroad an innocent person using false religious jargon and bigotry. I once thought we have passed the period of men in white sheets and burning crosses, but this incident has unfortunately proven me wrong. Remember, “let he who is without sin, cast the first stone.” I hope that soon the qualifications for office at USU no longer includes being heterosexual.
