Students enjoy summertime even without a large budget

Ashley Schiller

After two semesters of tuition, books and housing, many student’s ransacked wallets have nothing left to offer.

Summer implies fun, yet many students have no dough to feed their amusement. But does all entertainment require money? Probably not.

Take RC Willey for example. Stop and contemplate the opportunities of a Super Saturday. Free hot dogs and drinks for all. And if the date is enjoyable, extend it to a flat screen movie on a new leather couch; all free.

And why have the undefiled pastimes of childhood been abandoned? Hold a coloring contest and buy the winner a Frosty.

If summer days are to drift away, students may as well drift in a big vat of food. Emily Graham, a freshman in culinary arts, and her friends made their vacation fun with a cook-off contest.

“I won with my chocolate strawberry eclair cake,” she said.

Marissa Hyer, an undeclared freshman, preferred to use cheap soda as her entertainment. After giving the cans a good shake, she would throw them and watch them detonate.

“The two liters would shoot way up and explode everywhere,” Hyer said, “but we would always clean it up.

Mollie Jewkes, an undeclared freshman, found a whole new use for spandex by playing human rubber band. Seven yards of Spandex in a big circle made way for both laughs and minor casualties.

“Some girl landed hard and got grass stains all over her face,” she said.

So whether it was food vats or Spandex, many students’ summers were inexpensive but enjoyable. Empty pockets don’t stop the fun. Cheap entertainment is all around and still the way to go during the struggle through college.
