Aggie basketball squad adds junior college big man

Utah State’s head basketball coach Stew Morrill announced today the addition of Cassiano Matheus (pronounced Cass-e-ano Ma-tha-us) to the Aggies basketball program. The 6-10, 240-pound post player just completed his sophomore season at South Plains College in Levelland, Texas and will have two years of eligibility at USU.

Matheus, a native of Sao Paulo, Brazil, averaged 8.4 points and 5.4 rebounds per game as a sophomore at South Plains College leading his team to a 31-4 record and the school’s second consecutive appearance in the Junior College National Tournament. On the season, he shot 57.6 percent from the field and started 28 games for the Texans.

“Cassiano is a very positive addition to our program,” Morrill said. “His size and athletic ability along with an excellent work ethic adds up to an exciting future as a Division I player. We are delighted that he will be an Aggie and feel confident that he possesses the ability and character that we want at Utah State.”

During his two years at South Plains College, Matheus led the Texans to a 61-9 overall record and back-to-back conference and region championships.
