Tennis swept by Nevada

Matt Sonnenberg

The Utah State women’s tennis team’s losing streak stretched to seven on Saturday with a 7-0 loss to Western Athletic Conference rival Nevada.

As has been a trend in each of the team’s losses this season, the Aggies were swept in all three doubles pairings to open up the match.

“Nevada played very well,” USU head coach Christian Wright said. “We just couldn’t quite capitalize on opportunities we had.”

Utah State’s No. 1 doubles team Brianna Harris and Bridgette Strickland as well as the No. 3 doubles team of Taylor Perry and Kourtney Young each put forth solid efforts before eventually both falling 8-4 to Nevada’s No. 1 and No. 3 teams.

Singles play opened up with USU’s Harris falling in straight sets to Nevada’s Caroline Bailey 6-0, 6-0 in No. 1 singles. USU freshman Hailey Swenson suffered a similar defeat in No. 2 singles, falling 6-0, 6-0 to Nevada’s Maria Mizyuk.

In the closest match of the day, Utah State’s Bridgette Strickland suffered narrow defeats in straight sets against Nevada’s Florence De Vrye 7-5, 6-3 in No. 3 singles. Despite a loss as the final outcome, Wright was pleased with the effort put forth by Strickland.

“Bridgette played probably the best match I’ve seen her play,” Wright said.

The loss drops the Aggies to 2-8 on the season and 0-3 against WAC opponents. The Aggies will return to action Tuesday at home against Montana State.
