LETTER: Cell phones necessary

Editor,

I agree that there are those who abuse cell phone usage during class time.

However, in Mr. Wride’s moment of wisdom, he goes on to write, “As I step back to look at the problem, I see very little reason for people to even carry a cell phone to class. I would venture a guess that it boils down to ignorance, forgetfulness, fashion or perhaps ego. Whatever the reason, it is an unacceptable interruption of class time.”

Every time I hear a cell phone ring, my heart skips a beat. When my cell phone rings, my heart stops, because I know it is probably a nurse or doctor calling to tell me I need to get home or to the hospital right away. At the very least, it is a nurse asking permission to administer aspirin to my son, which by law, must happen.

While Mr. Wride believes a cell phone policy with real repercussions resulting in lost points on one’s overall class score might be an option, let me just say I would take an ‘F’ for every class I have ever taken at USU, and it would not compare to the punishment of sitting next to a hospital bed for a month or burying a loved one.

Mr. Wride may be attending USU at a great personal cost, but there are others who are paying a higher price by just attending.

If my cell phone bothers you, I am sorry. But I carry it out of necessity.
