OUR VIEW: Don’t forget to say thank you

Every day at 5 p.m. someone walks through the TSC emptying garbage. At 5:30 p.m. someone else comes through to collect the recycling. Meanwhile, a team of others are scrubbing the bathrooms, mopping the hall, collecting trash in the Hub and hallway, vacuuming all the carpets and cleaning the rugs.

These individuals do not get the credit they deserve. If it weren’t for them, the entire student body would be up to their belts in filth. Being a janitor has never been seen as a prestigious position, but someone has to do it and we should appreciate those who do. Most nights, the cleaning crew is on campus until well after midnight, cleaning up after the 17,000 students to trample through the TSC everyday.

Much like the shoe-elves and Santa Clause the work of these individuals often goes unseen, but if you take the time to notice, you just might come to appreciate all they do. Have you ever noticed garbage lying around the TSC halls when you arrive in the morning? Are the floors so covered in filth that they become a hazard to your health? Is there writing on the walls? Spots on the mirrors? Rings in the toilets? Are the doors still covered in fingerprints from the thousands of students who walked through them on the first day of school? No, they are not. Every night the janitorial staff works through the night to make sure we have a nice clean school to wake up to. So if you happen to be around the TSC at night, don’t hesitate to say hello, and thank the janitors for all they do.
