LETTER: Textbook tax break pointless

Chuck Sheya

To the editor:

The drop of sales tax on textbooks makes no sense to me. Is it really worth it to save $6.55 for every hundred dollars I spend on textbooks? I’m going to go out on a limb and say that the average student at USU spends about $400-500 on textbooks each semester. That means that each student will save about $26.20-32.75 each semester. Is it really worth it to not even save enough to buy a single tank of gas to deny the government $400,000 a year to improve our city/school? Remember, if the government has a drop that large, they are going to make up for it somehow. I wouldn’t be surprised to see state taxes raise. ASUSU President Peter A. McChesney sent out an e-mail to “announce one of the largest ASUSU successes of the year, and proud to be able to thank you for your help in this endeavor.” I don’t remember helping ASUSU with the tax cut. There has to be a better way to save students money. Remember, the next time you use any public amenity that taxes aren’t all bad.
