Top 10 comp problems

Jess Allen

The dreaded blue screen can only mean one horrible thing to a student: computer death. These and nine others are the top complaints USU students experience first hand when it comes to computer problems that are reported to the IT Service Desk.

1. The first problem the IT Desk usually gets calls on is about password changes or students forgetting their passwords.

2. Viruses or a computer running slowly can also cause difficulties. Taking the computer to the IT Center can help fix that.

3. Registering on the USU network to have Internet access on campus is another problem students often call about. Junior Lane Pope, a student in biochemistry, said, “The whole thing just doesn’t work. I’ve tried several times to get my laptop registered on it, and it never works.”

4. “My Internet doesn’t work” is a common complaint, whether due to the access being disabled, the registration to the network being expired or another list of problems.

5. Problems logging into e-mail accounts, switching from Webmail to Aggiemail, or figuring out the new accounts and how they work is another reason many people call in for help.

6. Three letters, VPN, or the proxy server, can be used to explain another issue many students have when not on campus and trying to get access to the library or other resources.

7. Hardware problems are something students encounter and bring their computers in to be looked at or fixed.

8. Some students find Blackboard difficult. Hetty Gower, senior in psychology, said, “It’s just slow logging in – it takes, at least, anywhere between two to five minutes to just pull up to a screen, and that takes forever.” Sometimes downloading doesn’t happen like it should or pages don’t show up that should be there.

9. People are not specific enough with the problems they encounter. The problem isn’t necessarily the computers, but the students that call without giving the IT Desk enough information to help them fix the problem.

10. The final problem is people calling up about outages and problems with McAfee.-jess.allen@aggiemail.usu.edu
