Program for substance abuse held Thursday

The Student Health and Wellness Center and Utah State University’s Counseling Center are hosting a substance abuse prevention program Thursday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Taggart Student Center Walnut Room.

Hate crimes sponsor to speak Thursday

The Utah State University College Democrats and the Pride! Alliance will be hosting a guest lecture and discussion with Rep. David Litvak on Thursday at 2 p.m. in the Center Colony Room in the Taggart Student Center.

Litvak is the primary sponsor of the controversial Utah hate crimes legislation. Students are invited to attend.

Free legal clinic to be offered later in April

Cache County Bar Association will celebrate Law Day this year by providing a free legal clinic April 30 from 5 to 9:30 p.m.

Attorneys from around the county will provide free legal information to the residents of Cache County.

The Law Day Free Legal Clinic will be held at the new municipal justice center in the public meeting room located at 290 N. 100 West in Logan.

Former President Dwight D. Eisenhower and Congress designated May 1 as Law Day in the United States. It is a day set aside to celebrate and recognize the rule of law and its role in securing liberty and freedom.

Fund-raiser aimed at gathering supplies

The local chapter of the American Red Cross is having a fund-raiser Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in front of Sam’s Club in Logan, to purchase medical relief supplies.

Volunteers will be trying to make bail by calling on members of the community to donate to the Red Cross.

The medical relief supplies will be placed in the Cache County relief trailer to be utilized in emergencies. Gifts and prizes of all sorts have been donated by local businesses to be given to those who participate in this activity.

MHR team places at regional competition

Two student teams from the Utah State University Management and Human Resources Department finished first and third place in the Regional HR Games competition in Albuquerque, N.M., last weekend.

The HR Games are sponsored by the Society of Human Resources Management, the leading professional organization of HR practitioners.

The competition tests students’ understanding of the common body of knowledge needed for professional certification in the field of HR management.

The three members of USU’s first-place team are Mary Arevalo, Megan Melosi and April Peterson. The team that took third place consists of Sara Allred, Ben DeSpain and Megen Ralphs. Mary Jo Blahna, Ron Godfrey and Al Warnick coached both teams.

The first-place team will advance to nationals to be held in Orlando, Fla., in June.

Group requests cell phones for project

In honor of Sexual Assault Awareness Month, SAAVI (Sexual Assault and Anti-Violence Information) is requesting donations of discarded, useable cell phones with chargers for people who need constant access to 911.

Donators should drop off their phones at the Women’s Center in the Taggart Student Center, Room 310, during April.
