LETTER: Football character shows character

Editor,

I graduated with my MBA and BLA from USU this past May, and now as a proud alumnus, I would like to commend one of our student athletes who truly shows others what sportsmanship is all about.

I flew to Phoenix from Los Angeles this past weekend to watch the Utah State football team put in a valiant effort against the nationally ranked Sun Devils. After the game, I stood near the players entrance off the field so I could congratulate the Aggie players and wish them luck next week. A group of kids, who were obviously ASU fans, kept asking each USU player for ANY kind of football paraphernalia that they could give them. I know how exciting it is to get any kind of apparel from an athlete when you are a kid, because I used to do the same thing. I watched two players look at the kids and say, “Sorry, the program is too cheap to buy me replacements.”

It was then that David Fiefia took off his sweaty armband and gave it to the children. You should have seen how excited they were. Fiefia also noticed this, disregarded the previous comment from his teammates, and continued to take off his football gloves and threw them to the children as well. I feel that Fiefia’s example should be awarded as he took the time to not only represent himself well, but also his school. It is often in times of adversity, such as a deflating loss to ASU, that our true character shines through. For myself, I was proud of my Aggies, and for Fiefia in setting a great example, and will continue to stand by them through and through. Thanks for your example Fiefia … and GO AGGIES!
