USU opens Big West play at home

Chris Barney

The women’s soccer team will have a busy weekend, taking on two opponents at home.

Friday, the Aggies will play against Cal State Northridge at 3 p.m.

The Matadors are struggling this season with a 2-4-3 record. Their last match ended in a tie against Sacramento State.

The last game the Matadors won was against Long Island on Sept. 14. Their only other win came against Gonzaga which the Aggies also defeated.

The Matadors and USU have met two times before. They split those two games between them.

Like the Aggies, the Matadors are breaking in a new coach this season.

USU will then take on Pacific on Sunday at noon.

Pacific has also been struggling this season. Their record currently stands at 1-7-1.

Their last loss was to defending national champions

No. 8 Portland.

The Aggies come into these matches on a two-game winning streak, both of them shutouts. The wins came in the Soccer Etc.-Nike Invitational last weekend in Boise.

Four players were named to the all-tournament team. They were junior Megan Mills, junior Nicole Fuez, junior Melissa Baggaly, and sophomore Elizabeth Masson.

Fuez scored two of the three goals in those matches. She was named USU athlete of the week and the Big West player of the week.

Tracy has also been playing well with two goals and four assists.

USU has been held scoreless in each of its four losses. In each of the Aggies’ wins, they have outscored their opponents 12-1. Overall they have scored 12 goals and given up six.

Senior Megan Mills has started every game at goalkeeper and only allowed six goals compared to 48 saves.

“She set a record for career shutouts and shutouts in a season,” said Head Coach Heather Cairns referring to Mills. “Our defense has been doing great.”
