Rotaract holds salsa-dancing fundraiser
USU’s Rotaract Club joined Logan High School’s Interact Club and USU salsa dancers for dinner and dancing at the Celebration Centre Friday, Feb. 16.
The event was an effort to raise funds for service projects that Rotaract and Interact participate in. Rotaract and Interact are the college and high school chapters of the Kiwanis.
The groups held a dinner and dancing. The Copper Mill Restaurant catered the fajita dinner.
Dancing included performances by the salsa dancers as well as traditional couples dancing. There was also a disc jockey playing music.
Many attendees enjoyed the dancing and were impressed with the Mexican-style salsa and instruction they recieved.
“The best part was seeing everyone dancing and having fun,” Rotaract President Varuna Ponnamperuna said.
Melody Anderson, Rotaract vice president, said the majority of people attending were Interact and Rotaract club members, but there were some local rotary members. Ponnamperuna and Anderson estimated 50 to 70 people were in attendance.
Ponnamperuna said they raised about $700. Anderson and Ponnamperuna said they wished they had planned ahead more and had more time.
“It was rushed, getting planned, but it was good,” Ponnamperuna said.
“Considering how fast it was thrown together, it went pretty well,” Anderson said. “And there were some last minute things that came up we weren’t expecting, but you live, you learn.”
The club would like to raise money for their service projects, including a Spring Break trip to Mexico. Both Interact and Rotaract are going to repair houses and do other service in Agua Prieta, Mexico, during their Spring Breaks.
Ponnamperuna said Rotaract is a great program for getting service and leadership training, and everyone who has an opportunity should try it.
“It will give you very good experience,” he said.
Rotaract meets Wednesdays at 8 p.m. in the University Inn room 510. Anderson and Ponnamperuna said student and community support would be greatly appreciated for future events as well as service projects. Anyone interested can e-mail rotaract@cc.usu.edu.
