Weston a three-sport Aggie threat

There is no doubt senior Charity Weston is as talented as they come. After playing on the USU soccer team for four years, her spectacular performance and teamwork has landed her first on the basketball team and now on the softball team.

Head softball Coach Candi Letts recruited Weston after talking to soccer’s Head Coach Heather Cairns. When many players on the softball team got injured, “We decided we needed some extra bodies to possibly do some running for us,” Letts said. Cairns suggested Weston would be a great addition to the team.

“Coach Cairns told me about Charity,” Letts said, “so we asked her and she said yes.”

Weston, who has never played softball in her life, was immediately signed on to the team in February and has been playing with them ever since. Because of her sudden appearance and no prior softball skills, Weston didn’t know what to expect.

“The first couple practices I was like, “Oh they’re going to hate me,” and it felt weird,” she said. “But a lot of them are really nice.”

Letts said Weston, being without any experience, brings an aspect to the team that helps the girls realize how talented they are.

“She fits right in with the girls, and she works hard,” she said. “She’s just trying to be a good teammate.”

With someone new being introduced to the team mid-season, how do her teammates feel about her presence on the team?

“They just think it’s all really cool,” Weston said. “One of the seniors was like, ‘I’m amazed how fast you pick stuff up,’ so they’re helpful and they help me out a lot.”

Being a part of the soccer world all her life, as well as the track and basketball team in high school, helped her learn dedication and hard work at a young age, Weston said.

“I was involved in a lot of sports when I was younger,” she said. “I played everything.”

Her desire for competition was apparent at every soccer practice as an Aggie, which rubbed off on all of her teammates.

“She loves to compete in practice, which raised the level of our training,” Cairns said. And, she said for Weston to get the opportunity to compete in basketball and softball “is just fantastic.”

Along with Weston’s coaches, her parents have been extremely supportive of her career from the beginning. Her father, being an avid participator in sports, had a big influence on Weston’s career.

“My dad, he was the athletic one,” she said. “But even though my dad is athletic, my talent comes from God.”

One of the most positive aspects Weston displays is her constant need to improve, Cairns said.

“She’s a really talented player, but she always has that drive to get better,” she said. “I think that is one of the reasons why she was able to help out the team.”

And her career doesn’t stop at USU. Many soccer offers have been presented to Weston over the past few months which would give her an opportunity to continue doing what she loved.

“Right now, I have contacts for England, and I’m going to go play over there hopefully,” she said.

No matter what sport this multi-talented athlete’s participating in, she brings her good work ethic and positive attitude wherever she goes.
