Lacrosse team gets key win over Western State

The Utah State men’s lacrosse team split the weekend with a win against Western State and a loss to the University of Utah Friday and Saturday, respectively.

Friday’s win against Western State was especially key for the Aggies. Going into the game the two teams were tied within their division, both having one loss.

The Aggies won the game 11-3 led by midfielder Tyler Berkey who scored three goals.

“Tyler Berkey played outstanding for us,” defenseman Nathan Daniels said. “We really needed him because we had so many guys who were out.”

Berkey said, “We played really well. But they had played two games in the previous 24 hours, so that probably helped us out.”

The Aggies were without Jason Lambert and Albe Garner.

Lambert will miss the rest of the season because he was not signed up for enough credit hours to legally play. Garner broke his collarbone last week and is out for another month.

Daniels also said backup goalie Ben Cole possibly broke his thumb during warmups.

The Aggies lost a tough game to Division I rival University of Utah Saturday.

During the fall season the Aggies beat Utah, and so they knew it would be a hard fought game.

“After losing to us in the fall, we knew that they would come out and play real hard,” Daniels said. “I think that we were just basically outplayed.” Next up for the Aggies will be a road trip to southwest Colorado where they will face Fort Lewis College and the Colorado School of Mines.

The games will be Friday and Saturday.

“It’s always tough to go on a road trip,” Daniels said. “But I think that they are games we can win.”

Utah State will not see action at home until April 13 when they host the BYU Cougars.
