USU hosts 21st Japanese contest

The 21st All-Utah Japanese Speech Contest will be held Saturday at Utah State University.

The contest, hosted by the department of languages and philosophy, will take place at 1 p.m. in Old Main, Room 225.

Students from USU, the University of Utah, BYU, Weber State, Utah Valley State College, Salt Lake Community College and Snow College will gather to compete. Contestants can compete on the advanced level delivering an original five-minute speech in Japanese on the “Salt Lake Winter Olympic Games,” or “What does it mean to be bilingual?”

The event is one of the longest-running contests of this kind in the nation, said Atsuko Neely, Japanese lecturer and organizer of this year’s event.

“Twenty-one years ago, Utah was a pioneer in recognizing the importance of providing an enriching environment for Japanese language education,” Neely said.

Forum held on tuition increase

A public forum will be held Thursday at noon in the Taggart Student Center Sunburst Lounge to discuss the pending increases in Tier II tuition.

The forum will address where specifically the money from tuition increases will go. President Kermit L. Hall will be leading the forum and hopes that anyone with questions or concerns about the tuition increases will come and express their views. People are also encouraged to e-mail President Hall any comments they might have.

Associated Students of Utah State University passed the increases in Tier II tuition March 15. All of the revenue from Tier II tuition stays at the university and is used to meet the specific needs of the university. Needs for the tuition increase include the large state budget cuts this year as well as improving programs and retention rates at USU.

The open forum goes along with the “Truth in Tuition” bill passed last year requiring that all universities inform their students as to where Tier II tuition is going. Aggie Ice Cream will also be served at the forum.

More information about the tuition increases and the forum can be found at www.usu.edu/about/president/

tuition/. A link is also provided on the Web site for those interested in e-mailing President Hall their comments.
