Funds granted for honor pledge

The Associated Students of Utah State University granted a funds request for the honor pledge and voted down another for building a new ASUSU Web site in Tuesday’s meeting.

“The pledge needs to be well-published to students,” Andy Haws, academic vice president, said.

It will cost the “ultra maximum” of $2,500 to put the honor pledge in the Taggart Student Center where all students could see it, Haws said.

Several bids were made by different companies to make the honor pledge display, he said, and realistically it will probably only cost $2,000. The extra $500 is to make sure there is enough money just in case.

As a result, the Capital and Support Funds request was unanimously granted by the Executive Council.

The council also turned down a bill to hire a professional Web designer for a new ASUSU Web site.

“I’m worried about spending money on something that we’re not sure if students are going to look at or not,” Tad Thornton, Extensions vice president, said.

“I’ve talked to many students in my classes and most of them don’t even care about an ASUSU Web site,” he said.

However, Andy Dilley, activities vice president, said, “I think a lot of new students use the Web site to find out about activities.”

The Web site is a good idea, he said.

Nollie Haws, public relations vice president, said one of the main purposes for a new site is to have it professionally done to include interactivity, constant updates and student feedback.

Hiring a professional Web designer instead of a student is also a good idea, she said, because “When it’s a business relationship you can tell them you don’t like what they are doing. When it’s another student it mixes the water and becomes almost personal.”

The Web site is estimated to cost $5,000 to build, she said.

Jennifer Putnam, Athletics vice president, said, “I have been taking Web design classes this semester and have learned the benefits of a well-done Web site.”

Although the bill failed, further discussion will take place on the details of the cost in next week’s meeting at 8 p.m.
