Donations needed to help Peruvian children

Utah State University students have a chance to help children in Peru get a good education.

As part of Education Week, the USU Education Council, with the assistance of various other campus organizations, has organized a service project to collect school supplies which will be taken to Peruvian children this summer.

Students are asked to donate supplies such as lined, plain or colored paper, pencils, crayons, manual pencil sharpeners, Spanish storybooks, erasers, and shoes. The shoes may be new or used. The supplies can be brought to the dean of education’s office in the Emma Eccles Jones Education Building, room 109, or to the Associated Students of USU office in the Taggart Student Center, room 326.

On Wednesday, Nov. 5, volunteers are needed to assemble the kits of supplies. Any interested individuals should meet in the Education Building at 5 p.m.

Jennifer Minchey, education senator, said they will continue to collect supplies until the kits are taken to Peru, so students may continue to donate after Wednesday. She suggested people going home for Thanksgiving bring back old school supplies they may have at home.

Students are welcome to help assemble the kits, she said, but “what we really need is just for people to donate suppplies.”

Minchey said Leigh Monhardt, assistant professor in the elementary education department, takes trips to Peru to teach children and will deliver the supplies.
