LETTER: Spectrum should never be silent
To the editor:
There is a lot to be said about the recent events regarding the game against that school from down south. President Albrecht’s letter to the students and his apology to BYU stirred up the anger of a lot of USU students.
I love the Spectrum — the atmosphere, the chants, the unison — everything about it is awesome. We clearly have the best student body in the nation. I love the USU student body and how we always seem to be good natured and never let things bother us.
The most puzzling thing to me, as I viewed the game from my normal seat — I personally don’t sit in the student section because I sit with my family — season ticket holders of 8 years — is why we chose to sit silently in apparent protest of President Albrecht’s remarks, instead of cheering on our Aggies.
Our team was out there fighting for Aggie pride and we chose to sit on our hands silently because we were bothered by Albrecht’s remarks. If we weren’t bothered we would have been standing up and cheering like usual.
I was very disappointed that we chose not to cheer for our Aggies Nov. 30. What did we expect? Were we expecting President Albrecht to retract his remarks and “un-apologize”? Come on, we should have just put his remarks aside and focused on something more important — our Aggies.
I know that this apparent protest didn’t last all game, and it was for a fairly short amount of time, but any amount of time spent not cheering for Utah State while at a game is a horrible waste of time.
Forget the remarks and let’s get back to doing what we do best. Let’s get back to making the Spectrum the hardest game of the year for opposing teams. Let’s get back to being Aggies, please.
