CAPSA organizes dance fundraiser

Students from Utah State University organized a dance for local high school students in Cache Valley on March 30 to help raise money for the Community Abuse Prevention Services Agency (CAPSA).

“We wanted to put our leadership skills to use and as USU students give something back to Cache Valley. CAPSA provides a worthwhile service to the valley’s residents,” said Justin Merrill, a senior at USU majoring in interdisciplinary studies.

“Our group consists of a wide variety of majors from Utah State University,” he said. “We are taking Adam Berry’s class entitled Managing Organizations and People.

“Our project has pushed our organizational skills beyond what we ever expected. It has required us to network with many helpful organizations such as the local school districts, Kinko’s, KVFX 94.5, Pepperidge Farm, McDonald’s, Logan City and USU police to make it a success,” he said.

Rebecca Dobert, the program coordinator for CAPSA, said “People give so much in this community and I am dumb founded.”

CAPSA is a grass-roots organization which works with the local community, she said,

“The truth is that we are just like everywhere else in regards to any kind of abuse, and unfortunately we have a lot of job security. So long as our services are needed we will be here,” she said.

Wells Fargo donated the second floor of their building. After being there for four years, the organization is in the process of constructing a new building, Dobert said.

The best way to help CAPSA is to be educated. CAPSA has teams of people in schools to help in this cause, she said.

Gabe Tibbits, a senior at Mountain Crest High school, said, “To tell the truth, I think that is way awesome what CAPSA does. I think that anyone that takes care of these people is great. And I think it is great that people have a place to go.”
