ASUSU: Campus Diversity

Mike Baker, a senior in accounting and Tiffany Leo, a junior in environmental engineering, will be running for the position of campus diversity vice president.

This is a new position voted in this year by the Associated Students of Utah State University.

“I plan to just talk to them, go to their meetings and be a link. I am not running their organization, I am just a link to a higher resource,” Leo said

Baker said he feels like the underdog, but is worried Leo is too passive.

“It’s more than just Diversity Week,” he said.

Baker said it is not only important to let the students know about diversity. It is also important to help students.

“They have concerns that need to be addressed,” he said.

For example, he brought up the idea of having a volunteer office where international students can be tutored in English. He also thought it was important to help students feel welcome.

Leo said she wants to integrate a program in which new officers of clubs and organizations meet with old officers.

“That way, they can tell [the new officers] what works and what doesn’t and we can build on old foundations rather than starting all over every year,” she said.

Leo said, “We can learn about each other and also about ourselves.”

Baker, who is part German and part Mexican, said, “I feel I can do the best job. I am a real go getter and have great people skills.

“Voters should really analyze who has the ability to do the job,” he said.

Baker said, “I enjoy the groups I would be working with.”

He plans to have a staff with an adviser over each area in order to stay in contact.

Leo said it was important to remember there is diversity in race, culture, religion, thoughts and ideas.
