ASUSU: Service Center Director

He has been wearing a red cape for the past few days trying his best to let the student body know he is ready for the position of service vice president.

After working in the Val R. Christensen Service Center for the past three years Brad Jowers, a junior in production management, said he feels he has what it takes to lead the students into community service.

“I have been a director for Special Olympics last year as well as involvement with Spanish Ambassadors and the Latter-day Saint Student Association,” he said. “I have learned a lot about serving along with leadership.”

Jowers said he thinks the director this year has done a lot of very good things for the Service Center like recruiting freshmen and underclassmen, but he feels the unity among the different groups could be stronger.

“Team unity is what the center is all about, and I would like to see the directors of the different organizations working together more,” he said.

Jowers feels working with the Special Olympics has helped him know what people need to succeed.

“It [Special Olympics] taught me that I am here to help others succeed, and that is what I want to do,” he said.

Dan Phelps, a junior in public relations, is wearing Band-Aids on his neck because he wants to show how much he can help the student body, not to hide an embarrassing blemish.

Phelps said he is devoted to the student body and the position he is running for.

“My heart and my past experience make me ready to be the service vice president,” he said.

He said the service center is currently run very well but, he would like to see more publicity around campus for opportunities to serve.

“The students need to know what is available to them,” Phelps said.

In past years he has worked with many parts of the service center and now sits on the council there.

Phelps’ focus is on trying to get others involved to share the happiness he has found in serving.

“As I have become involved I have noticed a change in my life. When I start doing something little for other people it makes me feel better. I want to do that for the entire university campus,” he said.
