LETTER: Candidate answers lacking

Dear Editor,

While attending the Greek Forum in The Hub on Tuesday, I was impressed with many of the candidates running for office.

I have seen the hours and weeks of preparation they have put into their campaigns. As impressive as this is, I was extremely concerned with a few of the answers given during the forum. One in particular made me ask myself again, “Why are they even running?”

In response to a question posed to the three presidential candidates about state legislation and its impact at Utah State University, one candidate responded, “When they [the legislators] think Utah State, they think Celestial.”

How sad this could possibly be the mindset of the legislators who help fund our university. Hopefully, this mindset can be changed so when they think Utah State they think about student achievement and academic commitment.

I would personally like to thank Steve Palmer for his student- and university-based mindset. I would also like to encourage next year’s president and those thinking of running to remember it’s not just about you. Your decisions affect all of us.
