Refried beans and burritos, oh my

Note: Quick Picks represents the writer’s opinion of where the best burritos are in Logan.

I have to be honest and say I probably am not the best judge of burritos in the land. I grew up with Mom slapping some refried beans and ketchup on a tortilla – not exactly great Mexican cuisine. I did my best though, and had fun eating, so I can report my findings to you today.

5. Taco Time – The Hub

I remember as a kid, riding my bike to our local Taco Time and enjoying a well-made crisp bean burrito. Now, it seems like the Taco Time at The Hub seems to be dramatically over-priced. I was not at all impressed with the flavor, texture or price of the burrito I ate. Trying to add flavor by using hot sauce didn’t work either. Grade: 1 1/2

4. LA Taco – Parking lot of Jo-Ann Fabrics and Crafts

Honestly, I never found time to visit the van, but my roommate had been there as well as several other friends. This is what I have heard – if you want authentic Mexican food it is one of the best, but for those of us accustomed to the Americanized version you might want to visit someplace else. Grade: 2

3. Taco Bell – 1500 N. Main St.

Always a classic, Taco Bell is practically an American tradition which is kind of ironic because they don’t serve steak and potatoes. I remember a few years ago when the choices for hot sauce included mild, medium and hot. It seems they have upped the ante a bit by offering medium, hot and fire sauce. My tortilla was stuffed with burrito goodness and was only $1.79. Not a bad deal. Grade: 3

2. Beto’s – 1147 N. Main St.

Every college student should be well-aquainted with Beto’s on Main Street. Although I have never really been south of St. George, I would imagine real Mexican food to be something like Beto’s. The burritos can stretch to feed two people if need be, and the quality of the meal is great. The prices tend to cater to the college budget so don’t be afraid of emptying your wallet there. Grade: 3 1/2

1. Tyler’s Burrito Special

My roommate recently taught me the finer points of making a great burrito. For around $6 you can easily make five delicious burritos. Although the convenience isn’t that of the Taco Bell drive through, the taste and quality is supreme. I recommend, as does Tyler, using a can of refried beans, a pound of chicken or ground beef, a packet of taco seasoning, lettuce, salsa, cheese and sour cream. Have fun. Grade: 4
