Robins finalists decided

The finalists for this year’s Robins Awards were announced Thursday evening.

Mike Brockbaker, chair of the selections committee, said it entails a long process beginning with friends nominating friends.

“Robins Awards are the most coveted of all Utah State University honors; these awards are to formally recognize individuals on campus for excellence and outstanding achievements,” according to the Robins nomination sheet.

Those nominated wrote biographies which included their non-campus and community service and university extracurricular activities and services. They were also asked to write about why service is important to USU.

Keri Mechan, assistant director of student activities, said the committee is given a detailed criteria as to what to look for.

Brockbaker said a point system is used and this will determine the winner.

The committee announced the five finalists for each category but the winner, in essence, has already been determined because the selection committee has already turned in their scores.

The black-tie awards ceremony will be held April 20, and the winners for each category will be announced.

Brockbaker said, “It’s really unique this year because only three people will know who the winners are before they are announced.”

Last year there were some leaks in the committee, he said, and some didn’t show up because they knew they didn’t win.

The theme for the night will be “A Night Of Honor.”

“This is like our Grammies or Oscars nominations,” Brockbaker said.
