Food court to be added to Cache Valley Mall

The Cache Valley Mall will be getting a new face this summer.

The Logan planning commission voted to accept the design of a massive addition to the Cache Valley Mall in Thursday’s meeting.

An approximately 54,000 square-foot food court is slated to be added to the mall’s western side with construction starting during the spring.

“The plan is to [start construction] and have traffic go through by the holidays,” said Kris Longson, with JP Realty, the mall’s current owner.

Longson said construction plans will be finalized with the realty’s new owner, General Growth Properties, a Chicago-based firm.

According to the planning commission’s docket, the western exterior of the expansion will be a combination of light and dark tan EIFS (a synthetic stucco), cultured stone and a large expanse of non-reflective glass. Parking spots will be removed to accommodate the expansion, but about 700 spots will remain.

Before construction can begin however, JP Realty needs to confirm with the department of public works of a relocation of utilities from under the building site to the sides of it, said Mike Mecham, with the department of public works.

The food court expansion won’t be the end of work on the mall, Longson said.

“It includes an interior renovation of the existing mall,” he said.

Longson said the common areas of the mall will receive new lighting, paint and ceiling treatments.

The commission allowed time for the public to comment and ask questions about the project. Of the 20 people in attendance, none had questions.

Eldon Hooper, a member of the planning commission, said more people need to get involved with items such as the Cache Valley Mall that affect the lives of Logan citizens.

The planning commission meets every second and fourth Thursday at 5:30 p.m. in the municipal council chambers at City Hall located at 255 N. Main St.
