Parade storms Main Street

Saturday was a big day for Utah State University as they celebrated the last day of their 2003 Homecoming. And what’s Homecoming without a parade?

People of all ages lined the streets, eager to get a glimpse of on-coming floats. Some also staked out their favorite spots before the parade with blankets and chairs hours before the parade began.

Although this year throwing candy off the floats was not allowed, parade walkers could hand it out to eager recipients.

The parade is only one of the many Homecoming traditions, including painting the street, the dance and the game. It was organized by the Student Alumni Association and the Associated Students of Utah State University. The theme for Homecoming was “Now and Forever: Living the Aggie Tradition.”

The parade was a chance for Logan to see what USU is all about. This included floats from different clubs, sports and even businesses looking for a little publicity.

“It was an eclectic display of culture and tradition in an otherwise serene street of downtown Logan,” said Asian-American Student Council President Dennes Bergado, a sophomore majoring in administration.

While some floats were decorated days in advance, others were put together on the spot, in just five minutes.

The parade started at 10 a.m. and went from JoAnn’s Fabrics on 200 South to Fred Meyer on 800 North along Main Street.

“It’s a great way to meet people,” said SAA member Krista Meeks, an undeclared freshman.

Many agreed that the parade was a great opportunity to display traditions.

“I love to display my culture,” said Bergado.

AASC has participated in the parade every year for the last four or five years.

From Wells Fargo and Rhythm Connection to New Horizon Beauty College and the ASUSU float, it looked like all of Logan City was participating.

“It’s cool to see all the different floats,” said Hilary Swenson, an undeclared freshman.
