LETTER: Cache Courthouse must be preserved
Dear Editor,
I would like to express my hopes and enthusiasm for the preservation of the Cache County Courthouse. After reading sections of the “Preliminary Historic Structures Report,” I have found that it documents “strong support” to preserve, renovate and continue using the building as “the symbolic and actual seat of government for Cache County.” Preservation of the Courthouse, I believe, will increase positive economic revitalization to downtown Logan, a worthy goal.
I wholeheartedly agree with the findings of the report, and my hope is that the Cache County Council will continue to pursue the report’s recommendations and take all steps necessary to preserve, restore and protect the building for future generations. Our heritage is an important part of the Valley’s well being and is worth preserving.
The report states that “Restoration of the building would send a signal that the county values its history, physical heritage and the preservation attitude of the public.”
I must endorse this observation. As more homogenous developments consume the uniqueness of our lands and architecture are built between Logan and Smithfield, examples like the Courthouse are desperately needed.
The brown air of Salt Lake City is coming. Actions taken by the Cache County Council to address urban sprawl, open space, agricultural integrity and historic values such as the Courthouse can have positive impacts on what our communities will look and function like in the future.
To literally have the ability to touch our history is so much more valuable than reading it from a book.
Our children can only benefit.
