Sides named top Aggie

Katrina Cartwright

Utah Statesman: When did you start throwing and why?

Josh Sides: In junior high, ninth grade. [I started throwing] because my friends wanted me to come and hang out with them, so I figured I would.

US: What do you like best about track, and what is your favorite event?

JS: Track’s fun. It’s something to do to relax. It takes my mind off school and everything else. I like all of the events, but if I had to choose one then probably the hammer throw. I like it because it’s something different. I just started doing it in college.

US: What are your goals for the season?

JS: I’d like to qualify for nationals in the hammer. I’m pretty close. I’ve thrown far enough to qualify before, just not in a meet. I feel I could throw that far again.

US: What made you decide to come to Utah State?

JS: It’s the only place that offered me any money. It’s the only school I talked to, really.

US: How do you feel about the team?

JS: It’s young. We have a lot of new people. But I think we have a really good chance of winning conference.

US: Is it hard to balance school, work and training?

JS: It’s really hard. I work at Burton Lumber and I go to school in the morning. Then I work in the afternoon. Right after work I head to practice. It’s very time-consuming.

US: Why are you a junior academically but a sophomore in sports?

JS: I red-shirted last season because I had surgery on my right knee. I hurt it during practice.

US: What are your plans after you graduate?

JS: I’ll keep going to school and get a master’s [degree]. I’m not sure yet what I want to do, something that has to do with business.

US: What is your favorite thing to do for fun?

JS: I like to go camping up in Idaho at Cub River or hang out at my house with friends.

US: What is your favorite music group?

JS: No Use For Name. They’re punk. I’m not very picky, I like most music.
