Week of the Young Child shows needs

The Cache Valley Association for the Education of Young Children and its community sponsors is supporting several events to celebrate the Week of the Young Child, through Saturday.

The Week of the Young Child highlights the importance of families, early childhood professionals and communities working together to support every child’s healthy development and early learning.

“Quality early childhood education is one of the best investments Cache Valley can make for our children’s future,” said Connie Schultz, president of the Cache Valley Association.

Research shows children attending high-quality programs are more-likely to develop the language, pre-mathematics and social skills they need to succeed in school, Schultz said.

There will be a free concert Monday for children at the Whittier Center (290 N. and 100 West) at 7 p.m.

The week will end on Saturday with an awards ceremony for childcare professionals who will be recognized for their achievements.

Preserve to honor past congressman

The Resources Committee in Washington, D.C., has approved the creation of a 15-acre nature preserve in honor of former First District Congressman Gunn McKay.

The preserve will be located near McKay’s hometown of Huntsville, Utah.

The preserve, to be created on U.S. Forest Service land, will serve as a nature buffer between the residential neighborhoods and farms near Huntsville and the nearby Cemetery Point recreational beach areas along the Pineview Reservoir.

Gunn McKay served as Utah’s First District representative in Congress from 1971 to 1981. He died on Oct. 6, 2001.
