Sky View High School’s resource officer arrested two men on March 26 who had trespassed onto campus property and attempted to break into the school’s vending machines.

Officer Greg Johnson, a deputy sheriff and resource deputy for Sky View, made the arrests during the school’s first hour period.

Johnson said it was about 8:30 a.m. when a faculty member told him about two suspicious men hanging around the vending machines in the school’s main hallway. Johnson said he immediately went to check out the situation and saw the men try to hide when they saw him approaching. Johnson said one of the men was in his 40s and the other in his mid 30s.

“That’s why they stuck out like a sore thumb in a high school,” Johnson said. “It was pretty bold of them to be hanging around like that, especially in broad daylight.”

Johnson said one of the men claimed to be looking for his son but hesitated when Johnson asked for his son’s name.

“One of the men finally told me it was none of my business and that I was asking too many questions,” Johnson said. “It certainly is my business when someone is trespassing onto school property.”

Johnson said the two men took off running in different directions and he chased after one and a few faculty members followed the other. Johnson said Mark Smith, Sky View’s AP History teacher, had been watching the confrontation from his classroom window and ran out to help. Johnson said the man ended up running right toward Smith and they were able to catch and handcuff him. Johnson said he was then able to arrest the other man in the south parking lot where the other faculty members had spotted him.

Johnson said the older of the two men had just been serving time in prison in Idaho and was out on parole.

“He was violating parole just by coming to Utah,” Johnson said. “He had a pretty extensive record.”
