Ensembles pick spring for concert

Utah State University’s guitar ensembles will give their end of the year performance Monday at 7:30 p.m. in the Eccles Conference Center Auditorium.

The four ensembles are under the direction of Michael Christiansen and are affiliated with the guitar program in the department of music.

Players are admitted to one of the two acoustic ensembles or two electric ensembles by audition.

Prior to the concert, the senior electric ensemble will tour Southern Utah and Las Vegas performing at the University of Nevada at Las Vegas, Dixie State College and various high schools.

Christiansen said the appearances are by the request of each school.

The performance in Logan will include a mix of styles and selections and will provide a unique sound experience.

“We hear the same thing when people experience a guitar ensemble for the first time,” Christiansen said. “Everyone always says, ‘I’ve never heard anything like that before.’

They perform locally about once a semester.

Tickets are available at the door and are free with a student ID or $3 for the general public.

Guest artist to perform Monday

Violinist Marjorie Bagley will be the guest artist with Utah State University’s Symphony Orchestra in its final concert of the school year Monday at 7:30 p.m. in the Kent Concert Hall.

Bagley, a founding member of the Arcata String Quartet, is a faculty member at USU.

The concert is under the direction of Sergio Bernal who is originally from South America.

Bernal said he wants to bring works of Latin American composers to Utah audiences, and the first piece will do just that with a distinctive Caribbean rhythm.

Bagley will join the orchestra for the second piece.

She began performing at age 9, and by the age of 16 had performed as a soloist with the Asheville, Winston-Salem and North Carolina Symphony Orchestras.

Bagley made her Lincoln Center concerto debut in 1997 with the Little Orchestra Society of New York, where she performed three Vivaldi violin concerti in one concert. Her Utah Symphony Orchestra concerto debut was in March 2001 under the direction of Keith Lockhard.

As a member of the Arcata String Quartet, Bagley has performed around the world in major concert halls.

Looking to next year, Bernal said he hopes to continue developing the string section of the orchestra, but would also like to present solos from the wind and brass instruments.

Tickets are available at the door for $3 general admission and are free to USU students with ID.
