Frisbee club to face rivals at sectionals

For the chance to qualify for regionals in California, six teams from Utah, Idaho and Montana will compete in the Big Sky Sectional ultimate Frisbee tournament at Utah State University Saturday and Sunday on the HPER Fields.

Among the teams competing for the top two spots are USU, BYU, Idaho State University, the University of Utah, Montana State University and Logan High School. There is still the possibility of two more teams entering the tournament, USU player Ben Moser said.

Last year the Aggies were one of the two teams to qualify for regionals, but could not actually attend due to student requirements.

This year with all their players registered, USU is expecting to qualify and actually attend regionals in California, Moser said.

“We have a really good team, we’re very athletic,” Moser said. “We’ve progressed since the beginning of the year.”

But the Aggies have some good competition standing in the way of regionals, he said.

“Montana State, they’ve been talking themselves up quite a bit, and they think they can do it,” he said. “And ISU is always an awesome team [and] they’re always ready to go.”

When asked which team he expects to provide USU its toughest competition, Moser said he expects USU’s game against ISU to be a dogfight as the Bengals beat the Aggies 13-11 the last time they played.

The Aggies can’t forget about one of their other main rivals, BYU, as well, Moser said. Last weekend the Aggies lost to BYU for the first time in three games this academic year.

“All the teams are really good,” he said. “We can’t afford to make very many mistakes.

“Hopefully we’ll play decent and win, but it’s going to be hard,” Moser said.

Saturday if there are only six schools in the tournament, each will play one game against the other five teams. Sunday the tournament will be changed to a two-bracket system where the loser is eliminated.

“No one is that nervous. Everyone is just really excited,” Moser said.
