LETTER: Tables need content watched
Editor,
I believe the restrictions set on tables in the TSC should be extended to their content, as well. I had the unfortunate experience of walking by a table that was selling glaringly anti-Democrat T-shirts. One such shirt had a picture of a donkey crossed out, and it said something along the lines of “if it looks like an ass and smells like an ass…” Another one generalized, suggesting that liberals are so open-minded that their brains fall out.
Hardcore Christian groups would not be able to sell shirts that were anti-Jew or anti-Muslim because they don’t believe in Jesus, so why are Republicans able to spew intolerance and hatred over political differences?
I felt extremely offended and ostracized by the messages they presented, and I’m sure I’m not the only one. I’m well aware that Republicans are the political majority on this campus, but that absolutely doesn’t make it right for them to put other groups in the situation of feeling uncomfortable about their personal beliefs. Here’s a suggestion: If you want to make items for people to wear that show their political leanings, put something on it that advertises your group’s ideals and strengths, not something that demeans other people. It disgusts me that whoever designed and is selling those shirts would sink so low. In the end, you’re the ones who look like asses.
