Chamber Orchestra adds summer concerts
The Cache Chamber Orchestra, the all-volunteer, community-based group has added summer concerts to its performance schedule. The premiere outing is Sunday, June 29. The concert begins at 7 p.m. in the Kent Concert Hall of the Chase Fine Arts Center at Utah State University (approximately 1110 E. 610 North, Logan). The concert is free and all are invited.
“Our first program includes an eclectic variety – there is something to satisfy all musical tastes,” said the orchestra’s conductor and director Robert Frost. “We could call this series ‘Summer Symphony.'”
The full orchestra will perform, and the program includes a guest soloist, vocalist Randy Smith.
A tenor, Smith leads the vocal music programs at Logan High School, and is featured in two selections with the orchestra. He will perform “Con te partirÃ,” the Italian operatic pop song written by Francesco Sartori (music) and Lucio Quarantotto (lyrics). The song is known as the signature song of Andrea Bocelli and it achieved international success when Bocelli paired with soprano Sarah Brightman.
Smith will also sing what Frost called one of the great tenor selections of all time, “Bring Him Home” from the international hit “Les Misérables.”
The arrangements for both selections have been completed by local composer and artist Jay Richards.
“Since this is truly an eclectic program, we will perform a couple of pieces for strings only, some full symphonic works and fun selections,” Frost said.
A sampling of additional selections includes highlights from “Phantom of the Opera” and “Sandpaper Ballet” by Leroy Anderson.
“This is a fun and lighthearted number,” Frost said. “The percussion section uses sandblocks to create the unique sound. Anderson wrote this orchestral work as a tribute to the soft-shoe style of dancing.”
The Cache Chamber Orchestra is sponsored by USU’s Department of Music. Its second concert of the summer is July 13.
“We decided to join the longstanding tradition of summer concerts provided by the USU Alumni Band,” Frost said. “We looked at the calendar and decided to pick up the Sunday dates when the band does not perform.”
The next concert for the Alumni Band is an outdoor concert Sunday, July 6, on the USU Quad.
