LETTER: Have a slice of Aggie pride

Editor,

Oh ye hypocrites, repent ye or ye shall be flogged in the street square.

I am he that supposedly asked a stupid question there at the Spike Lee low-inspiring lecture. Practice what ye preach, I might add. Did he not say that he was in favor of the NCAA giving up some of the money that they bring in from all the TV revenue?

He, being such a huge name around the world, I thought maybe he could start with us by helping our newly started women’s basketball team. I guess that is too much to ask, he being as famous as he is. Time and place is important, but when else? I was also extremely surprised at the reaction of the audience, who obviously was composed of mostly non supporters of the athletic department.

My comment: “The basketball team had a great season, we almost beat Kansas.”

Crowd reaction: some boos and chatter.

My question: “Can you come help the women’s basketball team, for they will begin their first season next year?”

Crowd: booing, comments from the peanut gallery.

How embarrassing is it to boo someone who goes out on a limb trying to better the same school he attends. Don’t you realize my purpose was to better this school as a whole?

I believe I had a right to say what I did due to the fact that I am part of the Big Blue Crew under the Athletics VP of ASUSU. I may not be the coach, but it is my job to see that the Athletics department progress. From what it sounds like, you would like to see it done away with.

I see on a daily basis what some of the student athletes put up with at a school that receives very little funding for them to play the sport they love. Maybe a name like Spike Lee could make at least a little difference by doing something for a school that paid him thousands to come speak.

I hope that at least some other school will benefit from Mr. Lee’s convictions, but I guess not ours. Maybe I should go to BYU, our rival from the south, so that I can attend a school where the students want to see their athletic teams succeed.

Truthfully, I refuse to, for I love Utah State. I have put too much heart and soul into this school to back out now. Stick your neck out for what you love.
