COLUMN: Vote for ASUSU amendment

This was some of the recent counsel given to members of the ASUSU Executive Council by Associate Vice President for Student Services Gary Chambers. Hopefully, many will recognize the wisdom in such a statement.

Recently, within ASUSU, there has been much deliberation and discussion concerning the role and responsibility of the Executive Council of Utah State University. A great deal of that dialogue has been directed specifically toward the ability of the Executive Council to operate more efficiently while still maintaining university-wide representation. Many have expressed passionate opinions concerning the possibility of restructuring the system that has now been in place for nearly 20 years. Would the current Executive Council make a strong and effective recommendation for the improvement or would they simply complicate things?

Restructuring ASUSU has been a common topic of conversation for Executive Councils of the past. There has been an overwhelming need for things to change, so that things can change. Beginning this week, Thursday, Feb. 24 and Friday, Feb. 25, please be on the lookout for links allowing you, the students, to vote online and approve the changes to our constitution, thus allowing for this restructure to take place. Please take the little time it requires to educate yourself and ask questions if necessary to assure that you make the right decision.

We, the Executive Council, are ready and willing to answer and clarify any of your questions and concerns. We, the members of Executive Council of ASUSU, feel very strongly that this is not the “perfect structure,” we have never claimed that to be true. However, at this present time we feel that this is the best structure for the ASUSU Executive Council. Changes may arise as needs arise, that should be an idea that we constantly embrace as a university, thus allowing this institution to achieve new heights of excellence in student government.

Please vote “YES” to amend our constitution and accept the restructure as approved and recommended by the ASUSUEC. Remember, “nothing changes if nothing changes.”
