Softball team picks up first two wins
The Utah State softball team dropped to 2-3 on the season after losing 6-0 to Cal State Northridge in the final game of the Alexis Resort Classic in Las Vegas Sunday.
The Aggies only recorded three hits on the day and tallied 14 strikeouts. Pitcher Jessica Garnett gave up three runs and came away with the loss. She is now 0-2 on the season.
The Ags will travel to Tempe, Ariz., next week for the Kajikawa Tournament. USU will faceoff with No. 15 Texas and South Carolina on the first day of tournament play.
The Ags picked up their first wins of the season Saturday in Las Vegas after beating Indiana 2-1 and the University of Texas-El Paso 12-5.
After falling behind early to the Hoosiers, Aggie Jessica Carver drove in Roxanne Ritchie to start a USU rally and sealing the win. Pitcher Leslie Higley improved to 1-1 on the season.
Against UTEP, six USU players recorded hits and the Ags jumped out to an early 5-2 lead. And the Aggies never looked back.
“To come back and win two today is outstanding,” head coach Lonny Sargent said. “The team didn’t lose heart.”
Friday, the Aggies lost their first two games of the season, falling to UNLV 10-7 and Marshall 2-0.
Despite a Sara Fleming grandslam in the third inning, the Ags stumbled in the fourth against the Rebels. Utah State committed three errors on the game.
“I’m proud of the way the girls played,” Sargent said. “Coming outside and playing on dirt for the first time this year caused some errors … It’s too bad we didn’t get the win we deserved.”
Against Marshall, USU couldn’t cross the plate. The Ags had six hits on the afternoon, while Marshall only mustered five.
