Aggies looking for 2 more road wins
Halfway through a four-game road stand, head basketball coach Stew Morrill is sick and tired, but he’s not complaining.
“I got a call from [Standford coach] Mike Montgomery and they’ve got a trip coming up where they play eight games in 12 days,” Morrill said. “So we’ve got no room to complain.”
Coming off big wins over UC Irvine and Long Beach, Morrill said the team has improved in two areas he has stressed since he came to Logan – defense and rebounding. But big wins last week don’t equal big wins this week, he said.
“Just because you did it last game doesn’t help you this game,” Morrill said. “It encourages you, but it doesn’t help you.”
The Aggies have converted more than 55 percent of their field goals over the last four games, something Morrill said makes playing on the road easier.
“We’ve made a lot of shots the last few weeks,” Morrill said knocking three times on the wooden table. “Everything looks better when the ball goes in the hole.”
In their first meeting with Cal Poly, the Ags walked away with an 11-point victory, but Morrill said the team didn’t play well enough that night to win on the road.
“We were just OK,” he said. “You get in Mott Gym and they tend to play pretty well offensively. They feed off the surroundings. It’s a shooters gym and they’ve got some guys that can shoot.”
The health of freshman guard Jaycee Carroll is also an area of concern for Morrill. Carroll, after rolling his ankle in the first half of the Long Beach game, did not return to play in the second half.
Morrill said the team hasn’t had a full a practice this week, so the strenght of the ankle hasn’t been tested just yet.
“It’s going to be a pain the rear for a while, maybe until the end of the year,” Morrill said.
“Until you just lay off for a couple of weeks it’s probably not going to totally heal. He doesn’t want to lay off it for a few weeks and we’re not going to let him.”
Thursday’s game against the Mustangs will tipoff at 8:05 p.m.
