Utah Statesman: Why did you choose USU?
Steve Middleton: Because they have a good engineering program. I’ll probably go on and get a master’s degree in the program after this.
US: What is your favorite thing about USU?
Middleton: I think the campus is really pretty, especially in the summer – when it’s not so cold. I like the snow. It’s just really cold.
US: What is your least favorite part of campus?
Middleton: Probably that some of the buildings are really old and kind of falling apart. They look fine on the outside, but on the inside some of them could use some work. Also, some of the classrooms are pretty crowded. They even have to hold classes in dorms.
US: Do you have any obscure talents or hobbies?
Middleton: Well, I’m 26 but I like to build things out of Legos.
US: What is the last movie you rented or saw in the theater?
Middleton: Wow, this is a tough question. I can’t even remember the last time, but I think the last one I watched was “Princess Bride.”
US: If you were to write a personal ad, what would it say?
Middleton: “Hi, I’m available?” I don’t think I’d describe myself much, because I don’t know what I would say. All I’d say is “I have flaws, but try me out!”
US: Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
Middleton: Employed, I hope.
US: What would be your dream job, if money were no object?
Middleton: I’d probably design cars or toys, or both.
US: If you had five hours of free time right now and money was no object, what would you do?
Middleton: I’d either go snowboarding or shopping. If money is no object, then hey, there are a few things I could use … like a car.
US: What would your dream car be?
Middleton: I’d like to get a 2000, or newer, Volkswagen Jetta or a Subaru Outback – but definitely manual transmission.
US: What is the strangest thing you have ever seen on campus?
Middleton: There was a dance on campus last semester and there was some guy getting taped to a pole a few feet off the ground, but they were using Saran Wrap. I think it was wrapped tight enough around him and there was enough of it that as soon as he started to move around and sweat, it probably started getting more restrictive.
US: Which five words best describe you?
Middleton: Ooh, I don’t want to sound cocky or anything, but I guess witty, stubborn, persistent, frustrated and tough. I can take a beating, but I can always get up from falling!
US: Who is the most famous person you have ever met?
Middleton: Probably Bill Nye. I met him when he came here. I shook his hand, but I was kind of depressed about not getting his autograph – I wanted it for my little sister. I guess he could see that I was disappointed, and he grabbed my hand, looked me in the eye, and said, “But remember: eye contact, 2004, September – OK?”
