Students urged to contact legislators

Students and faculty of Utah State University are urged to contact their legislators in order for USU to receive an estimated $36 million to replace the Merrill Library.

Celestial Starr Bybee, executive vice president for Associated Students of Utah State University, said the Merrill Library is a fire and safety hazard because of the way it has be restructured and renovated in past years.

Bybee said if USU is given the money to build a new library, it will have better study areas and new, state of the art equipment.

However, Bybee said, unless legislators are contacted by Tuesday, USU will most likely not be granted the money.

She said legislators will be deciding next week whether to grant USU the money and students voices will help immeasurably in the legislature’s decision.

“This isn’t going to get funded any other way,” Bybee said.

“Our library is ninth on the list of 18 projects petitioning for money from state legislature.”

If USU does not get the money this year, efforts will still continue for next year, Bybee said.

She said to contact your legislator, go to www.le.state.ut.us to obtain their office numbers.

Get chili before the spring thaw

The Utah State University Ceramics Guild, in collaboration with the USU Culinary Arts Club, hosts its annual chili bowl sale Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the Taggart Student Center patio.

Organizers said, for only $6 participants may select from hundreds of original handmade stoneware bowls beautifully crafted by the ceramic guild potters, and servers will then fill the chosen bowl with one of a variety of chilies.

In preparation for the sale, 22 ceramics guild members participated in a throw-a-thon, with each pair of skillful hands producing 20 bowls, organizers said, and several hundred pounds of clay were used.

They said the culinary arts students have created delicious chili recipes for the event, including the traditional red beans and beef and a vegetarian variety. Each bowl will be served with cornbread.

Both USU student organizations will use the funds raised to support their visiting artist programs. The funds also assist in the care and maintenance of studio kilns and equipment.
