LETTER: Abortion not a necessity
Editor,
I am writing in response to Cy Martz’ article (Opinion, Jan. 24) on the hypocrisy of the right regarding abortion. First, let’s discuss the theory of ending a child’s life because we don’t believe it will have a quality of life.
I was born to a single mother, who was also born to a single mother. When my mother became pregnant, she had the choice to end my life. Based on what was described as “quality of life” I should not be here.
My friend (a child of a single mother), who is now going to medical school, should not be here either.
My husband, whose parents are still in debt from their farm and multiple medical bills, should not be here, and he is currently working on a Ph.D.
We have a wonderful life, which we have earned on our own merit because we live in America, where it is possible to rise from the depths of poverty. If the left believes that quality of life of these children is able to be determined before birth, they obviously do not believe in the real opportunities in America.
Second, another hypocritical move on the part of the left would be that they have stated in their pro-abortion arguments that a fetus cannot be considered a “baby” until birth. However, the left has also stated when fighting for the case of welfare, that a family of three can be a mother, father (or other living child) and an unborn child. The welfare benefits can be given to the family as soon as a mother can prove pregnancy (four weeks along). So, leftists, what exactly counts as a person with rights? An unborn child has rights to welfare, but not to life? Explain this to me.
Third, if you want to see some name-calling, join an online discussion group about abortion. I’d say both sides are pretty even.
Last, premarital sex is not inevitable. Look around, and meet some Americans who have had the self-worth and the morality to say, “Not until I’m married.”
