Classes cancelled due to snowfall
Due to day-long accumulations of snow Monday night and Tuesday, Utah State University classes were cancelled and the campus was closed at 3 p.m. for the remainder of the day.
Classes were excused for both the main campus and distant education classes, said John DeVilbiss, executive director of public relations and marketing.
“For tomorrow, the decision will be made at 10 p.m. [Tuesday] if we will have classes tomorrow or whether we delay classes,” he said.
The decision was prompted by travel and safety concerns, he said.
Primary concerns were getting students, faculty and employees home safely, he said.
The university has done a “tremendous job” with snow removal, DeVilbiss said.
“They have just gotten to a point where they can’t keep up,” DeVilbiss said.
Additional accumulations were expected for Tuesday night, posing a possibility of another cancellation of classes, DeVilbiss said.
Essential services on campus remained open.
The last time USU’s campus was closed was three winters ago, Jan. 28, 2002. Prior to that, it had been two decades, DeVilbiss said.
“To the best of my knowledge, there has never been two days in a row of cancellations,” he said.
DeVilbiss said the possibility of class being cancelled Wednesday is unlikely.
